Maine’s Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program is now in effect, and employers must take action to comply. The Maine Paid Leave Portal is now open, allowing employers to submit their first quarterly wage report and premium payments, which are due by April 30, 2025.

Employer Contribution Requirements:

  • Employers with 15 or More Employees: Must contribute 1% of each employee’s wages. Employers may deduct up to 0.5% from employee wages, with the remaining 0.5% covered by the employer.

  • Employers with Fewer than 15 Employees: Must contribute 0.5% of wages, which can be fully deducted from employees if the employer chooses.

Action Steps for Employers:

  1. Register with the Maine Paid Leave Portal – The portal is now live, and employers must create an account to file quarterly wage reports and submit premium contributions. Payroll companies can also be authorized to file on behalf of employers.

  2. Begin Payroll Withholdings – Ensure payroll systems are updated to start deductions immediately.

  3. Submit Quarterly Reports and Contributions – The first quarterly wage report and premium payment can be submitted now through April 30, 2025.

Additional Considerations:

  • Self-Employed Individuals & Tribal Governments – These groups can opt into the program by registering through the Maine Paid Leave Portal.

  • Benefit Availability – Employees can start utilizing paid leave benefits on May 1, 2026, even though payroll deductions have begun.
